Karl Larsen is a Los Angeles-based photographer whose work documents the rock and roll world from the inside — the clubs, the streets, the backstage moments, and the cultural landmarks of a city that has always been inseparable from the music that came out of it. His images are the product of access, of relationships built over decades, of being in the right place because he was always already there.

Tower Records is an elegy for a place that meant everything to a generation of music lovers. The Sunset Strip location — open 24 hours, stacked floor to ceiling with vinyl and CDs, a gathering place for musicians, fans, and anyone who took music seriously — was more than a record store. It was a community, a cultural institution, a place where the music industry and its audience met on equal terms. Larsen photographs it as the landmark it was, preserving a piece of Los Angeles music history that no longer exists in physical form.
