By 1978, Wynette had spent more than a decade as one of the defining voices of country music. Her 1968 recording of “Stand by Your Man” — one of the best-selling country singles ever made — had made her a household name and a lightning rod for cultural debate. She had won the Country Music Association’s Female Vocalist of the Year award three consecutive times, recorded dozens of hit albums, and built a career of extraordinary commercial and artistic consistency.
