Tom Cruise & Paul Newman — The Color of Money
Fine Art Photography

Richard Corman's photograph of Tom Cruise and Paul Newman on the set of The Color of Money is one of the great behind-the-scenes images in the history of cinema photography. Two generations of American stardom in a single frame: Newman, the consummate professional, the legend who had already defined what it meant to be a movie star; Cruise, the young force of nature on the verge of becoming one. Corman captures them together with the ease and authority of a photographer who understands that the most interesting moments happen between the takes.

The image is a document of a specific creative collaboration — Scorsese's film, Newman's Oscar-winning return to the role of Fast Eddie Felson, Cruise's emergence as a generational talent — but it transcends documentation. What Corman finds in the frame is something more personal: two men, a shared moment, the particular chemistry of a set where something important is being made.
