Photographed in Los Angeles in 1979 by Norman Seeff, “In the Zone” captures Van Halen — David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Michael Anthony, and Alex Van Halen — in a session that has become one of the defining visual documents of the band’s early era.

The session was connected to the creative period surrounding Women and Children First, the band’s third studio album, released in March 1980. The imagery portrays the four members with raw energy, camaraderie, and the kind of chaotic rock swagger that made Van Halen one of the most electrifying live acts of their generation. Outtakes and shots from this 1979 sequence fed directly into the promotional and album imagery for Women and Children First, including the now-iconic back cover image of David Lee Roth.
