Norman Seeff — Joni Mitchell, Los Angeles, 1972 “Court & Spark”
Limited Edition Fine Art Photography

Norman Seeff is one of the most celebrated portrait photographers of the twentieth century. Born in South Africa and based in Los Angeles, he spent decades creating some of the most iconic images in the history of popular culture — from the Rolling Stones and Tina Turner to Steve Jobs and Joni Mitchell — with a distinctive approach that emphasized spontaneity, energy, and the revelation of authentic character. His studio sessions were legendary: part performance, part collaboration, always in pursuit of the moment when the mask came off.

Joni Mitchell, Los Angeles, 1972 “Court & Spark” is a portrait from the period that would produce one of the most celebrated albums in the history of popular music. Court and Spark — released in 1974 but gestating in these years — marked Mitchell's full arrival as a songwriter of the first rank, and Seeff photographs her in the creative ferment of that moment: alive, searching, and entirely in command of her extraordinary gifts. It is one of the defining images in his long collaboration with Mitchell.
