Norman Seeff — Joni Mitchell, "Hissing of Summer Lawns I," Los Angeles, 1975
Limited Edition Fine Art Photography

Norman Seeff is one of the most celebrated portrait photographers of the twentieth century. Born in South Africa and based in Los Angeles, he spent decades creating some of the most iconic images in the history of popular culture — from the Rolling Stones and Tina Turner to Steve Jobs and Joni Mitchell — with a distinctive approach that emphasized spontaneity, energy, and the revelation of authentic character. His studio sessions were legendary: part performance, part collaboration, always in pursuit of the moment when the mask came off.

Joni Mitchell, "Hissing of Summer Lawns I" is drawn from Seeff's extended collaboration with one of the most important artists of the twentieth century — a series of sessions that produced some of the most intimate and revealing photographs ever taken of Mitchell. This image, associated with the period of The Hissing of Summer Lawns, captures Mitchell at the height of her creative powers: restless, brilliant, and entirely herself. Seeff photographs her not as an icon but as a person, and the result is a portrait of rare depth and honesty.
