A second image from Norman Seeff’s 1976 Los Angeles sessions with Joni Mitchell, made during the period surrounding the recording and release of Hejira — her landmark travelogue album written largely during a cross-country drive from Maine back to Los Angeles.

Seeff photographed Mitchell multiple times over the course of their careers, describing her as endlessly inventive and collaborative — an artist who arrived at sessions with bold concepts already formed, and who brought the same compositional intelligence to the visual frame that she brought to her music. Hejira (1976) is widely regarded as one of Mitchell’s greatest achievements: a meditation on movement, solitude, and freedom, built around Jaco Pastorius’s fretless bass and Mitchell’s open-tuned guitar. This image, like its companion, captures the artist at that precise moment of artistic confidence and introspection.

Joni Mitchell is considered by many the most important and influential female recording artist of the late twentieth century. Songs such as “Big Yellow Taxi” and “Woodstock,” and her critically acclaimed album Blue, helped define an era — reflecting the social ideals, environmental consciousness, and disillusionment of a generation.
