The session took place in the period leading up to the 1979 release of Tusk, the band’s ambitious double album and deliberate departure from the polished California rock of Rumours. Fresh off the monumental global success of that record, Fleetwood Mac arrived at Seeff’s studio carrying the weight of expectation and the freedom of having already achieved everything. Seeff, known for his intimate and high-energy approach to music portraiture, encouraged physical interaction and spontaneity — moving away from stiff, posed band shots to draw out the raw, eccentric energy and dynamic chemistry that defined the group’s internal life.

The result is “Tusk IV”: a defining visual artifact of late-1970s rock culture, and one of the most recognized band portraits in the history of the genre. The five distinct personalities — each fully formed, each impossible to contain — are all present in a single frame.

Fleetwood Mac’s 1975 self-titled album reached No. 1, and their follow-up Rumours became one of the best-selling albums in history. Over their fifty-year history, the band’s rotating cast of members created a body of work spanning British blues to California rock, including “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way,” and “Landslide.”
