Norman Seeff
KISS, Los Angeles, California, 1974
Limited Edition Print

Photographed in Los Angeles in 1974 by Norman Seeff, this portrait of KISS captures the band at the precise moment of their emergence — before the arena tours, before the merchandising empire, before the mythology became so large it obscured the music. In 1974, KISS were still a band with something to prove, and the hunger in this image is unmistakable.

Hotter Than Hell, released in October 1974, was the band's second album — a harder, darker record than their debut, recorded in Los Angeles and steeped in the city's energy. Seeff, who was already one of the most sought-after photographers in the music industry, brought his signature approach to the session: creating an environment of creative freedom in which his subjects could reveal themselves fully. What he captured was KISS in full war paint and full flight — four young men from New York who had decided to become something larger than life, and were well on their way.

Norman Seeff is one of the defining photographers of American music and culture. His work with rock artists in the 1970s — the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Tina Turner, and now KISS — produced some of the most recognized images in the history of rock photography.
