Photographed in Los Angeles in 1972 by Norman Seeff, Joni!! captures one of the most gifted artists in the history of American music during their very first meeting — an evening that launched a creative partnership spanning more than fifteen years.

Seeff did not yet have a formal studio at the time. Mitchell and her art director came over to his Hollywood Hills home one evening, and they set up a simple backdrop in the living room. There was no professional makeup artist, no stylist, no hair person — just hanging out, listening to music, and drinking. The shoot was completely spontaneous and relaxed, and what Seeff captured was Mitchell entirely unguarded: radiant, free, and entirely herself.

It was the beginning of one of the great photographer-subject relationships in the history of music photography. Over the following fifteen years, Seeff photographed Mitchell more than a dozen times in deeply candid and imaginative settings, producing some of the most celebrated images ever made of her. This first session — informal, intimate, and unrepeatable — is where it all began.

By 1972, Mitchell had already released Blue, widely considered the greatest singer-songwriter record ever made, and was at work on For the Roses. She was at the absolute center of the Los Angeles creative world, and Seeff caught her at the precise moment when everything was possible.
