Photographed in Los Angeles in 1979 by Norman Seeff, The Sequence captures John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as Jake and Elwood Blues — a multi-frame composite from a single session that documents one of the most unlikely and beloved acts in the history of American comedy and music.

The Blues Brothers began as a musical sketch on Saturday Night Live in 1978 and rapidly outgrew the format that created them. By 1979, Belushi and Aykroyd had released Briefcase Full of Blues, a live album that debuted at number one and went double platinum — an almost unimaginable commercial achievement for a comedy act performing genuine rhythm and blues. The film that would cement their legend, directed by John Landis, was in production. The suits, the hats, the sunglasses, and the deadpan commitment to the bit were already fully formed.

Seeff’s multi-frame sequence format — a technique he had developed and refined across decades of sessions — was ideally suited to subjects whose power came from movement, timing, and the dynamic between two people. What he captured is the chemistry at the heart of the Blues Brothers: two men who were, together, something neither could have been alone.
