Photographed in Los Angeles in 1971 by Norman Seeff, this portrait of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger captures the creative core of The Rolling Stones at the moment of their greatest artistic achievement — the sessions that would produce Exile on Main St., widely considered one of the greatest rock and roll albums ever made.

Recorded largely at Richards’ rented villa in the south of France in the summer of 1971 and completed in Los Angeles, Exile on Main St. was released in May 1972 to mixed initial reviews and became, over the following decades, the definitive statement of everything the Stones were and everything rock and roll could be — raw, sprawling, rooted in blues and gospel and country, and utterly without compromise. It is the album against which all other Rolling Stones albums are measured.

Seeff, whose sessions were known for their psychological depth and collaborative intimacy, captured Richards and Jagger in the orbit of that record — two men who had been making music together for nearly a decade and who, in 1971, were at the absolute peak of their creative partnership. What he found was the chemistry at the center of the greatest rock and roll band in the world.
