By 1990, Houston had spent five years as the dominant force in popular music. Her 1985 debut album had produced three consecutive number-one singles. Whitney (1987) had made her the first solo artist to debut at number one. She had won Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, and Billboard Music Awards in quantities that had no precedent. Her voice — an instrument of extraordinary range, power, and emotional precision — was widely considered the finest of her generation, and by many accounts the finest of any generation.

Seeff, whose sessions were known for their psychological depth and collaborative intimacy, brought his signature approach to this encounter — creating an environment in which Houston could be seen not as a phenomenon but as a person. The three-frame composite format, a technique Seeff had used to powerful effect throughout his career, allows the viewer to experience her presence across multiple moments simultaneously — a portrait of someone who could not be contained in a single frame.
