By 1974, Sly Stone had already changed the course of popular music. The Family Stone — a racially and gender-integrated band at a time when that was genuinely radical — had produced a string of records between 1967 and 1971 that fused rock, soul, funk, and psychedelia into something entirely new. Stand! (1969) and There’s a Riot Goin’ On (1971) were landmark albums that influenced virtually every major artist who followed them, from Miles Davis to Prince to Kendrick Lamar. By 1974, however, the commercial peak had passed and the personal difficulties that would define the decade were fully in motion.

Seeff, whose sessions were known for their psychological depth and collaborative intimacy, found in Sly Stone a subject of extraordinary complexity — a man of immense creative gifts navigating a world that had not always known what to do with him. What he captured is a portrait of genius in a complicated moment, surrounded by the people who remained close to him.
