Photographed in Los Angeles in 1977 by Norman Seeff, this portrait of The Ramones captures the founding fathers of American punk rock at the height of their raw, stripped-down power — four young men from Forest Hills, Queens, who had invented a new language for rock and roll and were in the process of changing music forever.

By 1977, the Ramones had released three albums in two years — Ramones, Leave Home, and Rocket to Russia — and had established themselves as the most influential band to emerge from the New York punk scene. Their formula was deceptively simple: short songs, fast tempos, three chords, leather jackets, and an absolute refusal to be anything other than exactly what they were. Their influence on virtually every punk, new wave, and alternative band that followed them is incalculable.

Seeff, whose sessions were known for their psychological depth and collaborative intimacy, brought his signature approach to a band that had no interest in psychological depth or collaborative intimacy — and captured them perfectly for it. What he found was four individuals who were, collectively, something entirely greater than the sum of their parts.
