Photographed in Los Angeles in 1975 by Norman Seeff, this portrait of Tom Waits captures one of the most distinctive voices in American music at the very beginning of his ascent — a young songwriter whose world of late-night bars, broken-down hotels, and rain-soaked streets was already fully formed and entirely his own.

By 1975, Waits had released his first three albums — Closing Time, The Heart of Saturday Night, and Nighthawks at the Diner — and had established himself as one of the most original voices in the Los Angeles singer-songwriter scene, even as he stood completely apart from it. Where his contemporaries were writing about California sunshine and easy living, Waits was writing about the other Los Angeles: the all-night diners, the flophouses, the characters who lived at the margins. His voice — already weathered beyond his years — sounded like it had been soaked in bourbon and cigarette smoke for decades.

Seeff, whose sessions were known for their psychological depth and collaborative intimacy, found in Waits a natural subject — a man whose entire artistic identity was built around authenticity and the refusal to perform anything other than himself. What he captured is a young artist already in complete possession of his vision.
