Photographed in Los Angeles in 2021 by Norman Seeff, this portrait of The Kid Laroi captures one of the most remarkable young artists to emerge from the streaming era — an Australian-born rapper and singer whose ascent from SoundCloud to global stardom was as rapid as it was improbable.

Born Charlton Howard in Sydney in 2003, The Kid Laroi lost his close friend and mentor Juice WRLD to a drug overdose in December 2019, just as his own career was beginning to take shape. He channeled that grief into music of raw emotional directness, and by 2021 — at just seventeen years old — he had released his debut mixtape F*ck Love, which debuted at number one in Australia and reached the top five in the United States. His collaboration with Justin Bieber, “Stay,” became one of the biggest songs of the year, spending weeks at number one around the world.

Seeff, whose career has spanned more than five decades of American cultural history, brought his signature approach to this session — the same psychological depth and collaborative intimacy he brought to sessions with the Eagles, Tina Turner, and Steve Jobs. What he found in The Kid Laroi was a young artist carrying an enormous amount of loss and an equally enormous amount of talent, navigating both with a maturity well beyond his years.
