The pallet on which Rowdy on Wood is printed is the same pallet that carried the first shipment of Brian Bowen Smith's book Drivebys — the book for which Rowdy the Cowboy served as the cover image. The photograph and its substrate are therefore inseparable: together they form a complete object, a piece of history made physical, a singular artifact that connects the image to the journey that produced it.

Rowdy himself — a rugged Montana ranch hand encountered during Smith's 11,000-mile pandemic road trip across America — is one of the most iconic figures in Smith's career.
