Dylan’s appearance on the show’s first episode, which aired on June 7, 1969, was one of his first major public performances since his 1966 motorcycle accident. He arrived in Nashville having just completed Nashville Skyline, an album on which Cash had written the liner notes and appeared as a duet partner — a collaboration that reflected the deep mutual respect between the two artists.
Their friendship had begun years earlier, and their February 1969 recording sessions at Columbia Studio A in Nashville — the so-called Dylan-Cash Sessions — produced hours of informal recordings that have since become some of the most studied documents in American music history. The Ryman performance that Marshall photographed was the public face of that private connection.
