Jim Marshall | United States
Bill Evans, Riverside Recordings, New York City, 1963
Lifetime Limited Edition Fine Art Photography

Bill Evans was one of the most lyrical and harmonically sophisticated pianists in the history of jazz — an artist whose introspective touch and impressionistic voicings transformed the piano trio and influenced generations of musicians. Jim Marshall’s silver gelatin photograph of Evans at the Riverside Recordings sessions in New York City in 1963 captures the pianist in the intimate environment of the studio, where his most celebrated work was made.

Marshall’s access to Evans in this setting is a testament to the trust his subjects placed in him. The result is a photograph of rare quietude — a portrait of a musician in his natural element, fully absorbed in the music. For collectors of jazz photography, American music history, or mid-century portraiture, this is a significant and beautiful piece.
