Jim Marshall | United States
Al Cohn, NYC, 1963
Lifetime Limited Edition Fine Art Photography

Al Cohn was one of the most respected tenor saxophonists of the bebop and cool jazz era — a musician’s musician whose warm tone, melodic intelligence, and effortless swing made him a beloved figure in the New York jazz world for decades. Jim Marshall’s 1963 portrait of Cohn in New York City captures the saxophonist with the intimacy and authority that defined Marshall’s jazz photography: close, unhurried, and deeply attentive to the humanity of his subject.

Marshall’s early jazz work in New York is among the most important documentary photography of the era, and this image of Cohn is a fine example of his ability to find the quiet dignity within the working musician. For collectors of jazz photography, American music history, or mid-century portraiture, this is a rare and significant piece.
